Are IV drips safe? What actually happens, and what to expect

We've written separately about what licensing and qualifications to check before booking anyone (worth reading if you haven't). This one is about what safety actually looks like once the nurse is in your home.

Sterile technique, not just a clean needle

Before anything touches your skin, your clinician disinfects the injection site, uses a fresh sterile cannula and tubing for every client, and prepares the IV bag under conditions designed to keep it uncontaminated. This is standard practice, not an upsell — it's the baseline that makes IV therapy safe to do outside a hospital.

What side effects are actually common

Most people tolerate IV therapy well. The most common things you might notice are a brief pinch when the cannula goes in, light bruising or tenderness at the site afterwards, and occasionally a temporary change in urine colour from certain vitamins (B2 in particular turns it bright yellow — harmless, just noticeable). Some formulas, like NAD+, can cause a warm flush or mild nausea if infused too quickly, which is why those are dripped more slowly.

What's rare but worth knowing

Allergic reactions to any ingredient are uncommon but possible, which is exactly why your clinician reviews your health history and any known allergies before starting. If you have a history of reactions to vitamins, medications or supplements, tell us when you book so it can be factored in before anyone arrives.

Who should check with their doctor first

Pregnancy, certain heart or kidney conditions, and some medications can change whether a particular drip is appropriate. This isn't a reason to assume IV therapy is off the table — it's a reason to mention it when you book, so your clinician can advise properly rather than guess. We'd always rather have that conversation upfront than find out mid-session.
